It seems that even though I'm not very good at golf, I no longer count as a beginner.
It was Jon at work that after a few estranged visits to the local range, first tempted me out into the wilderness on a Saturday morning for a spot of rabbit hunting. Of course, I joke, it was about this time last year and it was 9-holes of golf in Southampton that he tempted me to, and actually, it was quite good fun.
I find there's a lot of satisfaction to be had from making a really good tee-shot, and like most things, the flip side of that coin sees a lot of bent clubs and holes in the ground - none of them made by rabbits (at least not on this occasion). I also find it incredibly unfair that in golf, 180 yards counts as 1 point in just the same way as 2 inches - there's something vaguely immoral about that to me.
But anyway, last Tuesday saw my first visit to the range since it was icy in the mornings and dark by 5 o'clock, but golf seems to have stuck in my head. Dare I suggest, 'like riding a bike'? By no means perfect, but I felt my swing had promise and a successful 'season' of golf would follow.
How right I was, because this afternoon I enjoyed a *very* windy 18-holes with a couple of friends and on the first round of 2008, beat my previous score for the course! Ok, I was 25 over par on a 3-par course, but if it wasn't for a couple of devastatingly bad eights, I'd say I did rather well. I sunk several of the first 9 in par (including 1 birdie) and genuinely surprised myself. Unfortunately, the second 9 weren't so pretty.
At least, not until the 18th tee...

Well hey look at that!? That white dot you see there, a yard or so to the right of the pin, is my ball! After my tee-shot! Yes, it really was spectacular ;) - I swung my trusty 7-iron and launched the ball the whole 180 yards to the pin... only then to fluff the putt and finish with a par 3 for the hole. Not bad, some might say, but not as sweet as it could have been. If only I was any good...
